Every Wednesday, 20 girls learned all about web design and the tech industry from leading female tech professionals and mentors. By the end of the program each girl knew how to code a website from start to finish, how to research and create user experience, how to design user interfaces, and how to imagine their own digital products and start-ups.
The Pixels After-School Program included guest speakers, monthly field trips to meet-ups and tech firms, and five 1-day workshops on topics such as Python, Sound Design, Arduino and more. The girls were also encouraged to continue learning at home through weekly coding and design challenges, sketching, research, and journalling.
As a mentor for this program, I loved being a part of each project the girls' embarked on, helping in anyway I could. The projects had such great range, from video games, art installations, applications to projects utilizing maKey maKey. It was exciting to see the girls open up to their own potential, as well as make new friends and learn the invaluable skills of collaboration, resourcefulness and self-discipline.
